The SNES Players Club

[Page 1]

From: Fleck | Posted: 12/29/2003 2:25:30 PM | Message Detail

There are a few of us that have started this in another thread, but decided it deserves a topic of its own. Here is the concept: It's almost like a book-of-the-month club except we are playing SNES games together.

Here are the Rules:

1) We play a new game every time the previous one has been beat (The last game was Y's III. You can check the SNES RPG topic for comments from all of us as we played through).

2) Each member, upon his/her turn gets to pick the next game. You get to pick a game in the order that you sign up. So far the sign-up list looks like this:

Fleck (Ys III: Wanderers from Ys)

PatrickPS2 (next to pick)

Teath/Camden

Math Deity

TechMaster

Delin

Mr. Crispy

Z3RO SoE

3) The person whose game it is sets a certain "Check point" that everyone must get to in the game before we move on to next and so on and so forth until we have all beaten the game. We used a specific FAQ on the game previous to this which worked out great because you could set the checkpoint on a certain chapter of that specific FAQ/Walkthrough.

4) The person who picks the game posts the name of the next game to be played and we all wait 24 hours for people to sign up (actually you may join in whenever, but we're just trying to establish some sort of direction, really). Then we play.

5) You are free to talk about your feelings on the game (which is kind of the point, don't you think?), but if you are going to post ANY kind of spoilers, please give fair warning. We don't want the game spoiled for anyone who hasn't quite caught up.

6) EVERYONE is welcome to join in. Whether you are actually playing along with us or you just want to chat about the actual game that is being played at the time, you are more than welcome to chat with us.

7) Any game is acceptable, but within reason. We probably won't have a whole lot of people signing up to play Super Tecmo Bowl through a whole season.

8) The game MUST have some sort of save feature. If we can't save and return to the point where we are all supposed to meet, then there will be WAY too much repetitive gameplay. Let's stick to the ones we can all play semi-together.

So, PatrickPS2 is the next person to pick the game. As new people join in you will be added to the list and your turn will come as you are signed up. Let's have some fun!!! Y's III was a blast this way, and I know we can keep the good times rollin'. (Wow, closing with a cliche... I'm losing it...)

Fleck I love the idea so guess what....

Im in!

Ok but I have a question what if I choose the game and it doesnt have a save feature but it can be played and beaten in one sitting. Now does that work???

---

If we COULD time-travel, wouldn't there already be someone from the future here right now?

From: TechMaster | Posted: 12/29/2003 4:10:32 PM | Message Detail

Technically, any game could be beaten in one sitting (applies to most games) so my guess would be no.

Example: Math beat Ys3 in one sitting, although most of us wouldn't be able to do that. (note: he did it on the real snes too) If Ys3 doesn't have a save feature, then it wouldn't have been chosen. (Math had to do it since the game's save battery was probably low in charge)

jim and Fleck - most everyone will probably be using *cough*roms*cough*, so save states will probably work.

i'm actually debating between 3 games- Star Ocean, Romancing Saga 3, and Lord of the Rings.

Star Ocean because its sequel for psx rocked, Romancing Saga 3 because Saga Frontier was next in the series and it rocked, and Lord of the Rings because i just want to be able to say i've beaten that game.

Star Ocean i won't pick because the Dejap translation isn't going to be ready in time, plus i know Camden is going to pick it; he's after me, and the translation should be done by his turn.

Lord of the Rings i won't pick because i've started the damn game about 30 times, swearing i'd play it through each time, but never had the patience. maybe someone will pick it later, i guess.

So i'll go with Romancing Saga 3. i've only played about 5 minutes into it before, and it seems to be more plot-oriented than its successors, but it still manages to have the cool skill/spell learning system that i enjoyed in SF & SF2.

So that's my pick, Romancing Saga 3. i'm not familiar with the game at all, so if there's anyone who is, let's let them pick the stopping points. if no one who signs up is familiar with it enough, then i'll read through a walkthrough and find some checkpoints for us. i hope yall are happy with my pick, and if not oh well- you'll get your turn. :P

From: Delin | Posted: 12/29/2003 4:39:42 PM | Message Detail

Didn't expect this going until later. Anyways I'll start looking for Romancing Saga 3 and if I must, which will probably happen, I'll get the ROM.

Just to reiterate what Fleck said any game is okay as long as it has a plot. No sports games please and as a personal favor to me no shooters, not because I don't like them, I just am terrible at them (poor reflexes and tunnel vision).

Also, a heads up for everyone, the majority of the games we play when we first start out will probably be RPGs. It's not necessarily that RPGs are better it's just that this topic came from an RPG one and most of us, I think, like RPGs best.

Sweet! Here's the new list:

PatrickPS2 (Romancing SaGa 3) (Current Game)

Teath/Camden

Math Deity

TechMaster

Delin

Mr. Crispy

Z3RO SoE

jimjim142

It looks like I will be playing from my computer as well. I might try hooking it up to my TV, so I can at least have the experience of playing it like that. This week may be tough because I am sure we will all have hangovers of some kind on Thursday, so you might want to set the first check point earlier on the game than you normally would. Also, Patrick, pick a FAQ/Walkthrough here on GameFAQs and post the link so that we will all be on the same page.

jimjim, whatever game you choose is probably going to be fine, but a game that can be beat in one sitting may not generate the same amount of conversation and interest as a game that takes us all a little bit of time. Plus, you may not get as many people to play. Just a thought. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Well, I'm definitely going to be walkthrough heavy for this one. (didn't really read a lot of the Ys3 walkthrough...no wonder I would miss that final ring eh XD)

Why I would pay more attention to walkthroughs in this one? Well, I tried it before, and had myself going into some areas that I'm not suppose to go into...and got myself pretty much into a place where I'm way too weak to continue...

ok here's the walkthrough, it's by D. Thompson:

http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/romancing_saga_3_a.txt

this game might be a little difficult to do for us. i was reading through the walkthrough, and it seems this game is just as non-linear as Saga Frontier. so there really aren't any definite stopping points. all the stories overlap, yet they don't all have the same goal, it seems. so i was thinking maybe we could pick stopping points by number of subquests? like say: 3 days for 3 subquests. or something like that. sound good?

here's another thing i was thinking. this game, as i said before, is VERY non-linear. the story changes depending on the character you pick as your main, along with other things. let's see... there are 8 main chars, so why don't we all volunteer to each play a different char? if we end up with more than 8 people playing, we can double up. this way we can make sure we have most every aspect of the story covered, and we'll be able to discuss the story(ies) from all sides. sound good?

here's a list of the main chars and their stats as written by D. Thompson is his FAQ/Walkthrough:

Julian The Grean haired Guy. Main Character

Str: 18 Dex: 17 Spd: 17 Con: 15 Int: 16 Wil: 22 Char: 14 LP: 10

Thomas The guy in an orange cape. Main Character

Str: 17 Dex: 15 Spd: 18 Con: 19 Int: 20 Wil: 13 Char: 19 LP: 10

Harid The only black character. Main Character

Str: 21 Dex: 12 Spd: 20 Con: 17 Int: 15 Wil: 19 Char: 20 LP: 10

Michael Wears big purpleish armor. Main Character

Str: 16 Dex: 17 Spd: 19 Con: 15 Int: 18 Wil: 21 Char: 21 LP: 10

Elen Big Pony-Tail, blue pants. Main Character

Str: 21 Dex: 14 Spd: 18 Con: 15 Int: 15 Wil: 18 Char: 20 LP: 10

Sarah BIG poofy hair. Wears yellow. Main Character

Str: 17 Dex: 19 Spd: 21 Con: 13 Int: 20 Wil: 11 Char: 21 LP: 10

Katarina Messy White Hair. Purple-Blue-Green Outfit. Main Character

Str: 17 Dex: 21 Spd: 23 Con: 18 Int: 10 Wil: 16 Char: 17 LP: 10

Monica Wears Pink and a short lil skirt. Main Character

Str: 14 Dex: 19 Spd: 20 Con: 14 Int: 16 Wil: 17 Char: 24 LP: 10

if yall end up wanting to do it this way, then i call Katarina as my main char.

in the D. Thompson walkthrough it says that it will have the char's normal job highlighted right after you pick them. so that's probably what job/class i'm going to use. the walkthrough also says the jobs don't affect anything about the game, story-wise. so you're free to choose without much consequence.

i know everyone's schedules are going to be different, that's why we'll take it slow. everyone just post when you're done with the opening quest, and if it turns out that we're going too slow, then we'll pick up the pace a little bit.

...

we don't start until tonight, though, just in case more people want to play. so everyone keep signing up!

I just got to the first town, so I'll stop for a little bit. Two questions to anyone who is there, if the other characters all go there.

Is there an easier way to earn money? I'm only getting four gold a fight, and the spells cost 1500-2000 gold each.

Second, am I the only one who likes it when you can see your footsteps in the snow? It's a small detail, but it's always stood out as the extra mile for me.

Fleck will have an easier intro than we do. Why? Well, since he's using Harid as main character he'll get into a war instead of having to go to that castle of the vampire. (intro wise, he got the easiest intro)

And yes, I liked that snow detail as well. Little details like that are always a plus in the graphics.

yeah i didn't like that one because it isn't organized well, text-wise. there would be entire pages of non-spaced text. but after reading over it, you're right, it is organized much better as far as quests are concerned. thanks for pointing that out. i agree with Tech, we should switch, if yall can deal with the huge paragraphs this guy writes.

Patrick: You can ask for translations, it doesn't violate the ToS. http://donut.parodius.com has a translation that's complete enough to play, though it isn't completely finished.

according to this walkthrough, the endings for every introduction are when all the chars get to Loanne and have received their reward for helping Monica. after this, you can talk to the other main chars and get some of them to join you. after this, the walkthrough just has independent quests listed. so that's where our stopping point is tonight- where everyone meets in Loanne. can everyone do that? if not, post back and we'll extend the deadline.

press select! that brings up the menu where you change eq, techs, magic, items, config, and you can save. it also has a list of events you are currently participating in.

also, i believe in Harid's you travel with Mikhail (Michael) back to Loanne and fight a boss with him. after that, you can find the other main chars around Loanne and get them to join you. that's the end of the intro.

we're now working on getting 3 independent quests as written by the walkthrough suggested by Tech by Wednesday. think you have time for that, Fleck?

You can join, but most likely you'll have to play the next game on rom as well.

what does it mean when it says "<skill> tech mastered?" for example, Poet just learned 'blunt strike.' he used it a couple times, then this message popped up right after he used it the second or third time: "blunt strike tech mastered." what does that mean? i thought once you learned a skill, you had it, and that was it.

Normally when you learn a skill, it will disappear if you remove it. Once you've used it enough, you'll master it. This means you can remove it without losing it, and it will be available to everyone from now on.

It's not. Someone at the RSaga3 board just informed me of that.

Fleck: Here is the rat section from the walkthrough I'm using.

The "correct" way is more fun. Examine the cave's door when it is closed. You will have a short chat with the Mayor. Examine the door again. Go to the rats and fight them for 1 or 2 rounds, and then run from the battle. Now go back to the door at the cave's entrance and Nina will open the door. Go to the West Forest and talk to the Professor. She will give you an item called rat poison. Go back to Kidlanto and talk to the Mayor. He will mention that Nina is being sacrificed in place of you. Go to the Offering cave, remove the rock and go in to fight the rats again. Note that music would be different this time. With the rat poison in your backpack, each rat will be damaged in each round except the genius rat. Target your attack to the rat that has received no damage from the Rat poison. It has about 2500HP.

The important step that many people miss is that one has to examine the cave door before fighting the rats. One should check the cave door at least 2 times until the dialogue remains the same. Now, one can go fight the rats. If you run and return to the cave door, Nina will appear and open the door for you.

If you forget to do so, you can always examine the door and then fight the rats again. It's annoying to go back and forth the dungeon, but you don't have to restart the game.

Yeah, I was powering up as well while waiting for you guys. I'm around Camden's lv with a five men team (don't have emulator open so oh well). I noticed that the quests are tough (the bosses) only before you powered your characters up. I finished that side quest with one of the missing kid that was around Muse. I think my next one would be Muse's dream. I'll most likely lvl up my characters a bit more in there. (note: enemy in Muse's dream drop an item that completely heals the party. Great way to stay in the side quest and power characters up.)

When you went to rescue the kid, did you explore the rest of the area? This was the first quest I went on, so the enemies at the bottom were shredding me. Especially the five snake ladies guarding the transporter. Not fun when I only had 200HP a person.

I've found that it's hard as hell to master 10WP techs. After 8 uses, I'm off to the inn already.

My team right now is Sara, Ellen, Poet, Nora, Sharl.

Note to other players: Until you get a certain item, do not be traveling down to the bottom of the vampire Leonard's castle. Until you get the item, it's pointless.

There is also a really tough boss that wrecked my party in a few rounds. It recovers 1000HP a turn, gets two attacks a turn, can do 150-200 damage to all characters on one of it's attacks(so twice), and has a hit all that puts a status effect on all your characters. I think it was confusion. Im not sure because I got killed after he used it...

I've a couple questions-

first off why do i get ambushed on 9 battles out of 10? i thought it was maybe the way i was making contact with the enemies to engage battle, but that's not it. then i tried changing my formation because maybe it was a secondary effect of it, but tha'ts not it. so what is it?

secondly, what's the deal with gaining stats? do more powerful monsters really make you gain stats (level up) quicker? i've noticed that it doesn't really matter the power of the monster, you'll gain 1-2 stats every battle, then maybe 1 battle out of 6 or so you'll gain alot of stats (5 or 6). do you get what i mean? is this true?

first off why do i get ambushed on 9 battles out of 10

If you RUN into an enemy, it causes ambushes. I had problems with that earlier. It lets them go a little quicker, and lowers your defense, so you'll want to walk into the enemies.

secondly, what's the deal with gaining stats?

How the hell do I gain stats from battle. The only thing I can get are HPUp, TechUp and <weapon>Up. Can you get normal stats to go up in battle?

He hasn't posted since we started.

I currently have a good sized party, but we aren't very strong. I've got Julian, Sara, the poet, Monica (my character), and Thomas. I think I'll play some more later on and try to do some more quests. One thing I do hate about this game is how hard it is to get money. Each enemy drops only a few gil. It makes it very hard to equip your party.

Delin: I was having money issues, but I just looked, and I have 10,000. I made good money somewhere.

My characters and techs:

Sarah 686/Poet 693- DimensionCut 3WP, Backstab 7WP, GushingWind 8WP, Satsuki Rain 10WP

Ellen 677- Megahawk 6WP, DynamicHit 8WP

Sharl 678/Leonid 666- GreatWheel 5WP, DoubleDragon 6WP, SpiralCharge 7WP

Everyone has Hypnotize Dodge and Random Arrow Dodge

My favorite quote from the game:

"Wait! I'm not only smart, I also have the utmost beauty, which mixes with my wisdom in perfect proportion. You can call me a beautiful genius! With such perfection, it's a sin not to let others know about my existence."

No, it's random. Though when you fight really strong enemies, you have a higher chance of learning skills.

By the way, I was just wandering around looking for quests, and I started fighting in old dungeons. I found one of the gate guardians at random. They're supposed to be really tough, but I beat him using basic attacks. Sad really...

I wasn't fighting the final boss on purpose!

Spoilers

You get a pirate in the game, too! He sucks, but he's a pirate, so he's in my main party. You can also get a snowman!

I was looking at the walkthroughs for pretty much the first time, and it was talking about how the abyss guards were hard, and the dragon bosses were hard. I already beat an abyss guard and four dragons without healing or losing a character.

/Spoilers

Is there any real reliable source of healing multiple characters in battle? Items will only heal one person, and my characters all suck with magic.

My characters and techs:

Sara 744/Poet 747 - SweepDown 0TP, SplitBody 7TP, GushingWing 8TP, SatsukiRain 10TP

Sharl 782 - GreatWheel 5TP, TripleThrust 10TP

Herman 601 - BladeRoll 5TP, Megahawk 6TP, DynamicHit 8TP, SkyDrive 9TP

Leonid 699 - PowerupFist 7TP, NiagaraBuster 8TP, MeteorKick 8TP, DragonInferno 15TP

I have been completely out of pocket the last day or two and have not been able to play at all. Hopefully I can get caught up a bit tonight. I'm worried that I am doing something wrong, though. My characters are nowhere near as strong as most of you guys. Maybe I'll be the guy that sees how LOW your level can be to beat the game. Oh, well. I have to take my work laptop home tonight to play. I'll post my stats/progress tomorrow morning.

I'm way behind... I haven't played RS3 since Friday. After I started feeling better, I got wrapped up in trying to beat Ratchet & Clank 2 (which I did. Got 21 Skill Points and 14 Platinum Bolts. Though "Skill Point" is a misnomer in that game if you ask me...). Which is strange, because I didn't like the first one very much.

I'll try to catch up tonight.

ead of one of the battle slots. This puts you in commander mode.

Instead of choosing your attacks, you choose commands that are vague, and your characters choose skills they have at random to use. So far it sucks.

Multitechs. In Commander mode, your characters can combine techs into multitechs, which deal damage greater than the single techs on their own, and hardly ever miss. Also, certain magic spells that are extremely good can only be cast in Commander mode, and use up three characters.

You also regain a little HP and correct status every turn in commander mode. Load up a save and dump your main character in the back. Try it out. Some of the harder fights are easier with multitechs.

As soon as I can afford a bigger HD for my xbox he'll set me up in the same way :) If I get this done soon I'll rejoin everyone for Star Ocean 1. *I'll probably play anyway since SO2 is one of my favorite games.

Math: Star Ocean 3 has caught the "Everyone thinks that Gamefaqs and Gamestops and EBs release dates are set in stone" syndrome.

This is where Gamefaqs will put up a release date, so everyone believes it's the real release date, or when Gamestop and EB employees come on and say that the system says a certain date, so that's what it is.

As far as I know, Sqeenix has never set an american release date. All they've done is put an ad in the Final Fantasy 10-2 booklet.

So unless you see an update on Sqeenix's page, don't listen to anyone.

Approximated release dates I've heard: March2002, April2002 September2002 December2002 March2003 June2003 July2003 August2003 December2003 March2004 May2004 August2004

As you can see, most of those are behind schedule.

Oh, and since I'm farther than a lot of people, I'm playing through a second time, to do some of the other quests I missed out on.

I'm actually starting to get somewhere in RS3. Here's a bit of a checklist of what I've done in the order I've done it:

*Returned the Professor's pets

*Beat the rats

*Killed the Ice Lake monster with Wood

*Escorted goods to Yamas

*Tracked the bandits to their hideout, talked to Paul, and beat their leader

*Beat some demons with Robin and fake Robin

*Saved the kid in the Devil Palace (made it as far as the door sealed with the Holy King's ring, too)

Currently I'm trapesing around in Muse's dream with Sharl.

At this rate, I may have an Abyss gate or two down over the weekend.

From: Mr Crispy | Posted: 1/10/2004 11:28:12 AM | Message Detail

I thought I heard you had to talk to someone before you can make it through the desert...?

I can't figure out how to get through Muse's dream... I talk to the disappearing girl, leave, talk to her again, end up in a U shaped room, go through the door in the middle, talk to the disappearing girl again, leave, talk to her again, end up back in the same U shaped room. Then I talk to the disappearing girl again, end up in the same room, etc. The whole thing is an infinite loop.

Right now, my party is Julian, Sara, Nora, Wood, and Sharl. Julian and Nora have close to 400 HP, Wood and Sharl have almost 500. Sara is really lagging behind. She is only now approaching 300 HP. And while she learned some fairly good bow and sword techniques, she doesn't seem to be doing very much damage. So I'm thinking of dumping her and picking up Herman instead. He may be weak, but I can just stick him in the back till I power him up. And I want to get Boston too. I may keep Nora a little while longer even though it means she can't blacksmith, at least until I avenge her father's death by beating Jackal (for which I need Herman).

If I ever get out of this dream, I think next I'll try to go through the Aurora Path and Ice Galaxy, then beat the car battle, and then start doing the Vanguard quest. Once I get Herman, I'll start closing gates. If I can't close the Water gate first to powerup Herman, then I'll do Earth, then Water as soon as possible. Then I'll give Jackal the beat down and then work on the other gates and sidequests.

Though my plans may change, depending on whether or not I can do certain things at certain times.

And yeah, the Robin thing was sort of funny. Though I still like "Why does he always go out through the window?" from SaGa 2 the best.

I thought I heard you had to talk to someone before you can make it through the desert...?

To get to the Dry River, you have to talk to a woman outside the Divine Tower. The Divine Tower is three screens west from the start of the desert.

To get through Muse' dream, there is a room with three nuns and a treasure chest. Get the chest three times. You should get a Dream Jewel, a Silver Hand that you should immediately put on Sharl and never take off again, and some other item.

After you get those, you can randomly get to the right room by picking up the nun, then going down to the hall, then down again. It will sometimes put you in the right room. If not, try again.

Has anyone been to the Jungle yet? If not, tell me how you feel about butterflies when you do...

I have to go back to classes tommorrow. Had to go out and get my books today... Gah! 400 dollars...

So I wasn't quite able to get as far as I wanted.

But I did get the Devil King Shield and beat Undine and Volcano, the Dolphin Statue (snatching up Herman in the process), defeated the dragon car machine (I found the battle funny for some reason...), and I went back to the Devil King Palace to close the Earth gate.

Except that Arakes kicked my ass.

So I'm going to find the special technique in the gate, then seal it up.

Was I not paying attention enough? I can't remember anything about a special technique. The only thing that triggers with me are the skills you can only learn by using a certain skill a lot.

I've found that the Tiger Cave formation is needed for most of the tough battles. It pretty much lets the enemies go first every round, but it cuts damage by 40% or so. Using that formation with Satsuki Rain will let your sword wielders go first, and get a nice defense boost. If you don't have that, work with Gushing Wind or something else strong.

Welcome, Cloud. Yeah, the next game is Star Ocean. I am getting my computer ready to hook up to my TV with a SNES controller connected to it so it will at least FEEL real. A lot of us also chat in the SNES RPG topic (which is where this all started). Tech is right, you can't ask where to get ROMs, but if you do a search, you are bound to come across a good sight eventually.

Yes, if you want to join, that would be great. At the moment our sperm count, if you will, is low. The game were playing right now, and the next one, are both non-english games, so if you're not familiar with patching a rom with a translation, I can help you through it.

I can't give you a site for roms, the ToS doesn't allow it. Unfortunately, this is pretty much the only rule that's diligently enforced.

I believe you have to get 30 karma before you can delete your own messages. It shouldn't matter though, most people won't mark it unless they're a complete ass.

I tried AIM, but it always crashed my computer. I recently got mIRC, but my internet disconnects like crazy when I use it, more so than usual.

I'll just give you a run down for patching a game. There are two ways to do this.

Process 1:

If you use Zsnes to play your roms, then this will be a lot easier. We'll use Live a Live for a guide. Say you have a rom for Live a Live, and it's name LaL.smc. Just rename the translation to LaL.ips, and Zsnes will patch it on it's own when you load the emulator.

Process 2:

This one requires more work, but is still quite easy. First, you need to download a program that can patch roms, which is here: http://zerosoft.zophar.net/files/IPSWin20.zip

That's the first thing you need. Second, you need a rom. You'll have to find that on your own. So you should have IPSWin.exe and whatever you named the rom, such as LaL.smc.

Now, to get the translation, go to donut.parodius.com and click on the system you want. For Live A Live, select snes, scroll down to Live A Live, and click it. This will bring up the Live A Live page. There will be a section titles "Translations available" that has complete, incomplete and dead projects. You want the complete one.

Under complete translations, you'll see a translation done by Aeon Genesis. There will be a box that says patch version. Download that patch.

Now to actually patch the game. Start IPSWin. In the first box, click the folder and locate your rom. In the second box, click the folder and locate your patch. Then hit patch. If it worked, a message will pop up telling you it was a success in just a few sec'-_'-_

From: Camden | Posted: 1/12/2004 3:17:21 PM | Message Detail

You can post anything you want about translations and emulators. The only thing you can't really do is post a url for a rom site, or directly to roms. You also can't ask for them, or tell someone to send them to you in an email.

So if you have a problem with an emulator, you can post it. Emulators are completely legal to have and use.

I was referring to the special multitechs like Galaxy (which is in the opening). I believe you need to find some sort of scroll or something in the Abyss Gates before you can use them in certain formations.

It sad to see so many people dropping out. :(

But I guess there's more important things.

I hope you find the rom and enjoy the game, cloudsss.

^Out of the people who are left, they are about halfway to two thirds of the way through. I'm on my second playthrough, but I played a lot and I'm basically waiting for everyone else. I'm already close to halfway on the second playthrough.

If you want to play, just start now. If we finish before you, we can either wait for you, or you can just play the game whenever you want. We started with the idea that we would set a place, and all work towards it, but it's pretty much devolved into someone chooses a game, and everyone plays it.

Where did Z3RO SoE go? I don't think he's posted in a real long time.

Im asuming all of you guys have played chrono trigger and chrono chross. I dont know if its true but Someone told me that there is a game that comes in between the two that only came out in japan called radical dreamers. if its true that would be a great idea for a game to play.

by the way, have you guys played earthbound on here yet.

From: Camden | Posted: 1/13/2004 1:44:19 PM | Message Detail

Radical Dreamers was released on Satellaview, and though it's not a true sequel to Chrono Trigger, it's known by most people to be the game that inspired the creation of Chrono Cross. It has pretty much a complete english translation, but it's not a game very many people will like.

The whole game is completely text only, with still pictures to go along with it. It's pretty much a book put into rom format. At points, the text will ask you what you want to do, you choose an option, and on with the story. Battles are carried out in this way, and so is everything else.

If you enjoyed the visuals of Chrono Trigger, you may want to check out Dynami Tracer, another Satellaview game that uses the sprites and backgrounds of Chrono Trigger.

I've played through Earthbound, and found it to be quite fun.

Fleck: I believe you were the one just getting Earthbound. What do you think of it so far, if you've played it?

Yeah, I am in the desert getting my ass kicked by those stupid things that cast fire and blow up when they die. I haven't played it much since we started Romancing SaGa 3, but I have liked what I have played. Very unique game. I know everyone that plays it says the same thing, but now I understand. There just isn't another game like it. I really like the fact that if you are much stronger than the enemies on the screen, they run away from you. That should be a part of every RPG. I always hated wasting precious minutes killing stupid 1 exp slimes just to get to a town to rest.

Anyway, I am ready to play Star Ocean by the end of this week. Let's take a roll call before then so we know how many people we are dealing with. I know a lot of people have dropped out and I don't even know if I am going to totally finish SaGa 3 before the next game, but I will eventually. Looks like we picked up a couple of new people with Cloudsss and Drake, so maybe that will make up for those who have dropped out.

Well, I just sealed an Abyss Gate. That fight with Arakes was pretty easy this time around... didn't even lose a single LP this time. No match for Satyuki Rain, Double Dragon, and Stone Cut doing between 1000 and 1500 damage per attack, for a grand total of about 8000-9000 damage a turn. In fact, the first time I lost I think it was because I was trying to spark new attacks.

So I guess now I'm off to go get Boston the lobster, and beat the Water Gate.

I got the star ocean rom and I got that patch thing from that site donut.parodius.com and I used it but only a few of the menus are translated and none of the text is. From what i could tell that was the only patch that was even suposed to be closed to done although i couldnt tell you for sure. could somone give me some advice about this.

also I tried playing star ocean on the zsnes emulator and i couldnt see anything. i messed with it a little and couldnt get it to work so im using a different emulator for that game. could some one else check and see if star ocean works on zsnes. That's the site you would "want" to go to if you're going to play Star Ocean. Get the "latest" patch from there as well as the graphic pack that is used to decode the SDD1 chip that Star ocean uses. Also, don't use an outdated ZSNES since it doesn't support the graphic packs.

^What Tech said. I explained in the email how to apply the graphics pack, if you can't figure out the graphics pack, there is a topic about it on the Star Ocean board, and if that doesn't help, you could always use Snes9x, which plays the game without the pack.

Snes9x is, however, the worse emulator by popular opinion.

Great, Kain611! We'll add you to the list. You don't have to play RS3 if you don't want to, because we are all either almost done or, like camden, going through it a second time. We all played different characters, but it doesn't really matter after the intro who you play, as far as the story goes (I don't think). How far are you in Star Ocean?

Are you going to start over or just wait for us to catch up to you? We usually set a certain place in a walkthrough that we all try to get to and then go from there, that way we can all chat about the same stuff and not spoil anything. Whatever you want to do. We probably won't get into an all Japanese game because most of us, sans Camden, don't speak Japanese. I guess we could try it and just let Camden tell us what the hell is going on the whole time. The next game gets picked by Math Deity, though, and I doubt he will pick an all Japanese game.

Cam: I have my brother to hook everything up, but I might need your help with the ROM stuff.

I'm guessing that since you played Romancing Saga 3, you can probably patch a rom, so the only thing you should need any help with is the graphics pack. Go to www.dejap.com, and click on the projects page. Find Star Ocean. On the Star Ocean page should be a link to a graphics pack. You'll need to download this.

If you don't have your roms in the same folder as your emulator, you're going to have problems. Alright, in your emulator folder, create a new folder titled, "Socnsdd1", and put the files in the graphics pack in that folder. You're all done.

I know that Math Deity doesn't like ROMs, but he might be in,

I'm pretty sure he told me that he was going to play. It could have been Crispy. I don't know, the name started with an M, that's for sure. Well, that's not for sure, but I thought it started with an M. Meh, whatever.

It really is a lot of fun when everyone is playing and talking about different strategies and storylines an such together.

Did we actually do that much on topic discussion? I thought I pretty much ruined it, kind of like my mod *****ing I'm doing in the other one. I really need to start topically discussing actual issues, because I'm sure everyone is pretty annoyed at this point. Oh well, I signed up for LUE, I can always annoy people there if I need to. I haven't yet, but I'm sure I'll fit right in.

or, like camden, going through it a second time.

I gave up. I got to the Jungle again, and got completely flustered with the butterfly maze. I believe that area was created solely for Hitler to take over the world. I named the red butterfly Super Nazi Extremist Pig, and I named the blue butterfly James Cameron.

Does this group do say an all Japanese game?

We could, but don't expect it. If we did, the game would need either an extensive walkthrough, or someone very familiar with the game's layout. Seeing as most games with a healthy sized walkthrough already have translations, I doubt this will come up.

We probably won't get into an all Japanese game because most of us, sans Camden, don't speak Japanese.

You and Patrick both said that. I can't understand japanese at all, not visually or orally.

Heh, I said orally...

I hope this one is short enough. I responded too much, and broke the post size limit.

Hey just wanted to add that the walkthrough at rpgclassics.com is GREAT! Best I've seen for SO. Also the walkthrough for this game Bakumatsu Korinden Oni (here at Gamefaqs.) is pretty good with jap symbols that appear in game and things like that although it doesn't finish the game. So Saturday is when SO gets started? We should all be able to beat it at least once by next week. Also if you use the new version of Snes9x you don't need the graphics pack although it does speed it up. One other thing to if you use Znes (graphic pack required) I've found if you set the Old GFX mode2 instead of the new GFX you encounter fewer bugs. Peace.

I doubt that. Most of us are playing a lot of games at once, and once my second copy of Unlimited Saga arrives(grumble) I'll be playing more than one. We've been playing Romancing Saga 3 since this topic started, so you can check the date, and it will be a day or two at least for everyone to finish up.

Snes9x doesn't need the graphics pack, but it's been said that Zsnes won't for one of it's next updates either. Also, quite a few people have said that the graphics for Star Ocean encounter problems on 9x, pack or not.

Delin: Update. The newest version is the only one that works. If it still doesn't work, well, sucks to be you.

There is four Star Ocean games.

Star Ocean for the snes.

Star Ocean 2 for the playstation.

Star Ocean Blue Sphere for the gameboy.

Star Ocean 3, which is really the fourth, for playstation 2

Star Ocean 3 has about 70 different release dates, but unless you see it on Sqeenix's actual page, don't believe them. The Gamefaqs release dates are almost always wrong, as are Gamestop and EB dates. The game is coming out in 2004, and that's all we really know.

Star Ocean Blue Sphere did not come out stateside, and probably never will. A translation is being made by AGTP, but I don't think there's been an update in a while.

For other people who need help, here is the best explanation I can give.

You need these things.

1 IPS patching program

1 Star Ocean rom

1 Star Ocean translation

1 Graphics pack

Use your patcher, and patch the translation to the rom like normal. Make sure that your Star Ocean rom is in the same folder as your emulator.

Alright, now in the folder where you have the emulator and Star Ocean rom, create another folder called, "Socnsdd1". In the graphics pack, there should be two files, and some type of readme. Put sdd1gfx.dat and sdd1gfx.idx INSIDE the folder you just created.

Emulator = C:/Windows/Zsnes/Zsnes.exe

Rom = C:/Windows/Zsnes/StarOcean.rom

Folder = C:/Windows/Zsnes/Socnsdd1/

Graphics pack items = C:/Windows/Zsnes/Socnsdd1/sdd1gfx.dat and C:/Windows/Zsnes/Socnsdd1/sdd1gfx.idx

Now, the location doesn't matter, as long the graphics pack is in the socnsdd1 folder, and that the socnsdd1 folder is inside your emulator folder.

That should help everyone enough.

Also the graphics pack is not needed with the latest version of SNES9x(1.42 i believe) however it speeds the game up considerably so it is still recommended. Also Star ocean Blue Sphere might have found a translator:-) Ghideon is suppose to be sending the dumped script to him. There's a thread on the Gamefaqs board for the game. Wish him luck and maybe he'll be motivated to finish it quicker:-)

Anyway on with SO, and just so you know the beginning is rather long and the walkthrough on rpgclassics is the premium choice. Cya!

Just so you know, someone on the Genesis board saw our topic and started a similar thing there. I'd join that one too, but I am just way too busy with

I'm in on Star Ocean, just I'm still playing RS3. I don't have quite as much free time now, but I'll try to get another gate or two done over the weekend. I'll try to find the game, and my old save. I think I lost it in a hard drive crash about a year or two ago (along with DQ 5 and 6 saves about 1/3-1/2 of the way through... v_v).

I won the tournament in Zweig (which triggers the quest for the Holy Grail; insert Monty Python references here), and beat the Water Dragon on Limit Island. So now I'm at the Water Gate. After which I'll beat Jackal, get some of the Holy King's treasures from the trials in Lance, and move onto the Wind Gate.

I tried playing star ocean with the snes9x and it does work. AT least I your using a zsnes though you dont actually patch the game with the graphics patch you just put it in that folder and load the game.

From: cloudsss | Posted: 1/16/2004 4:42:45 PM | Message Detail

Hey everybody. For anybody who doesent know in the star ocean games skills are very improtant and using your skill points eficently is even more important.

First of all in the begining of the game youll only want to learn the most esential skills, like ones that give you stat bonuses. and these only at low leveles. Then after you get the effort skill you should max it out and it will seriously cut down on the amount of skill points you need for everything else. Also Most skills only need to have one charecter who knows them. some of the exceptions are battle skills. Also use the authoring skill to level up your other skills without using skill points.

good luck every body. This sure is fun.

The battle system is unique but also really cool. However there are some anoying things about it that get fixed in second story.

Now then, to attack first you press the attack button once and a little targeting reticule will pop up on one of the enimes. You select the target you want to atack with the directional pad (arrow keys) then you hit the atack button again.

For special attacks which you get as you level up you have to go into the menu and select special. then you select either the r1 or l1 buttons to place the attack on and select which range to put on. until later in the game each attack has a short or long range designation, and you can only place it on its type of attack range. when your in battle you press the atack button once select your target and then press either the l1 or r1 buttons depending on where you placed the special move in the menu. If your not at the apropriate distance of long or short range then the attack wont work. what range your at is displayed on the screen.

Im pretty familar with this system so if anybody has any other questions about the battle system the skill system or anything else just ask and ill probably know. good luck. From: Camden | Posted: 1/16/2004 8:38:28 PM | Message Detail I'm getting familiar with the walkthrough layout, and will post a first stop a little later tonight.

Question: I heard that, unlike Star Ocean 2, you can't freely move, but have to hit a button. Explain it if you could for me.

When you press the y button a small target will apear on the field. you can move the target with the arow keys and press a to run to wherever the target is. if its over an enemy you will atack them and if its over an ally youll step right in front of them and protect them. I havent ever used the protect charecter comand in this game and it is somewhat unique so I dont know how well that works.

Problem is time doesent stop when you do this so it will not be something you should be doing often. only in boss fights and when your cornered im guessing.

Also you can set a charecter to protect other charecters in the menu.

One other thing is that Ratix doesent have an AI so you can switch from him but i wouldnt do it for long cause he will get bashed pretty bad.

From: Camden | Posted: 1/16/2004 8:56:11 PM | Message Detail

Meh, screw planning it out, it's not like the other two stayed on schedule. This one probably won't either.

Seeing as my experience with the game is little, I don't have any clue how long we'll have to play to get to certain points. I guess I'll stick the first stop at Velcant Lair, which is in big white letters.

We'll see how long people take to get there. Be it in one day or a week, I'm not sure.

I'm going to go watch SWAT now, because it's due back in the morning, so I probably won't start until tomorrow morning.

Well, I officially started. I beat down some thieves at the start, and that's all I've done so far. Conan starts in a few minutes, so I had to stop.

I was going in thinking I'd have to hit a few different buttons, but once I seen that I had no battle skills to start with, I just mashed my End key all to hell. Poor end key...

Do the L and R buttons have any function inside battle? I tested them out, but didn't see any visible results.

It should only take about 2 hours game time or so to get to this point. I'm sitting idle at Parj Temple(been there when we started) and I'm currently at 6hrs. 31 minutes. It's not that my team lost, because they got knocked off in week one of the playoffs by Carolina. I just have this irrational hate for the New England Patriots. The superbowl right now is this:

Team I hate for no reason vs. Team I hate because they knocked off my team.

I'm hoping for a meteor or something to crash in Houston on February 1st. No winners make Ryan a happy boy!

I didn't find it in a quick search and find, but does ebay keep track of your map? I'm on my sixth account or so now, and I don't really want all my negative feedback from the others to surface.

Actual on topic things: I just met Ronixis and Iria. I know, I'm not that far, but I'll catch up. I was the last to finish in the first game, I can't be last again yet.

Say, Camden, how hard was the final boss in RS3? Did you have to level up a lot (have 999 HP, etc.)? It sounds like Egg how you can weaken it by destroying the other bosses, though is there any way to restore LP/WP/JP in the last dungeon (I think Barrier Stones do this...?)? I might try to get the rest of the relics and then head to the east this weekend or next week...

Delin: If you kill the four forms before you fight him, he's a lot easier. I used Tiger Cave formation, and had about 900HP for each character. I had no reliable source of healing beyond items I had equipped, which didn't do much. I just put out as much damage as I could, and pretty much ignored healing. Because I used Sara, I got to fight in the commander mix mode, where I could use Multi and Single techs. He had about 80,000HP or so. I didn't count, but that seems about right.

As long as you have a lot of strong techs, he shouldn't trouble you that much. By the way, have you went to the fire palace yet? I just wanted to know if anyone hated the butterflies as much as I do.

Getting to the Fire Palace wasn't that hard for me. I got there before even reaching the fairy who tells you to follow the butterflies. Even if it took longer, I probably wouldn't find it as annoying as the Celestial World dungeon in SaGa2, the Battle of South Moundtop in SaGa Frontier 2, or Chaos in Unlimited SaGa.

I should almost be set tech wise. Julian has Satyuki Rain, Dragon Tail, and Split Body with the Seven Star Sword and Ice Sword (for the apparant counter attack effect); Nora and Sharl have Triple Thrust, Spiral Charge, Double Dragon, and Wheel Slash; Boston has Powerup Fist and S Dimension; Black doens't have anything spectacular, but has the Devil King Axe and Shield (thought I'd put them all on one person so I only have one character that burns double WP). Might need some better moves for Boston (who I'm thinking about stacking with Life Canes for their shattering move for an emergency heal all and as a healer in general) and Black, and a better spear for Nora (Sharl has the Holy King Spear).

I don't have my original file any longer, but I have the file from the second playthrough I started, which is stuck at the damn jungle. After I finish the jungle, I can pretty much tackle the boss again.

Sara 929HP/134TP SwordLv38 - Split Body, Golden Dragon

Poet 964HP/130TP SwordLv39 - Split Body, Golden Dragon

Black 986HP/128TP AxeLv37 - Megahawk, Sky Drive

Elephant 969HP/131TP BigSwordLv33 - Stealing Hands, Earth Crescent

Leonid 929HP/171TP PunchLv38 - Powerup Fist, Dragon Inferno

Sharl(Extra)984HP/115TP SpearLv34 - Great Wheel, Triple Thrust

Everyone also has: Dodge MultiAttack, Dodge Hypnotize, Dodge Lifesteal, Dodge Stare, Dodge Feint

Weapons and Defense

Sara 62/51 - Dragon Scale, Knight, Life Cane, Salve 3

Poet 58/42 - Dragon Scale, Knight, Salve 3, Poet Fiddle

Black 60/33 - Brover, Buster, Knight, Salve 3

Elephant 54/41 - Ice Sword, Knight, Life Cane, Salve 3

Leonid 69/69 - Flame Beast, Holy Grail, Life Cane, Salve 3

Sharl(Extra) 50/40 - Holy King, B.Lancer, Knight, Salve 3

That's what my party looks like before the jungle this time, so they'll probably have max HP before the final boss. Still trying to learn that one tech from sweepdown, which I haven't done yet.

So am I up next for picking the game to play? I dunno if Star Ocean is done yet...

I'd like to play through either:

1. Lord of the Rings - Be the first kid on your block to beat it!

2. Super Ninja Boy - I don't know much about it except that I believe it's fairly obscure and has very long passwords. I played a few hours of it last spring and haven't gotten back to it yet.

or

3. Math sucks at picking games, skip him! >_< (don't pick 3)

So vote away. Whichever game receives more votes will be the next game on the docket. BTW, both are US releases. Sometime in the next few months I'll hopefully get my xbox set up to emulate; until then I'm sticking to carts.

Honestly it doesn't matter to me what we play next. I'm still a little miffed that I don't have a computer. With my wife out of town until Friday, I have no internet at home now, and it is driving me crazy. I can only post in here in the morning and afternoon when most of the posting happens in the evening. Anyway, back on topic, Lord of the Rings sounds fine to me. I don't have Super Ninja Boy, but I am sure I could find it. I think we still have a ways to go, though before Star Ocean is over. Mr. Crispy, Camden, Kain, Drake, Cloudsss, Tech(?), and Delin(?) are still playing Star Ocean, so we can't start a new game until they all beat it.

Math Deity, have you beaten 7th Saga?

Yeah, I'm still playing SO. I got the Van, Moore, and Astral emblems. Also got Fear. I was fiddling around with the arena a bit before moving on. I got as far as the B rank with Ratix. I seriously freaked out when I saw that the last battle of B rank is with a Star Seraph. Makes me wonder what the A rank finishes off with.

But I've started running into glitches with the game again. When I was playing two years ago, I got fed up trying to get through the trial cave without it glitching up at the boss. And then my hard drive crashed, and I lost all my progress in a number of games. :( SO froze up on me no less than 4 times yesterday. So I decided to play a little more of Torment since I'm getting fairly close to the end and I want to finish it before moving on to another PC RPG like Baldur's Gate 2 or Fallout.

I dunno if I'd play the LotR game or Super Ninja Boy. I want to at least finish Star Ocean, Romancing SaGa 3, and Tales of Phantasia before moving on to other SNES RPGs. (Though I was thinking about picking up a copy of Lufia 1 I saw at Gamestop.)

Have 3 of the 4 emblems heading to the Sylvant ruins to "lose" Marvel. Screwed up and lost Tinek:-( should have SO beaten either tonight or tomorrow. Not sure if I'll get around to do the 7 star ruins though. Here's some suggestions of snes rpg's incase anyone is wondering.:-)

Lord of the Rings- supposedly damn near impossible without cheating.

Tales of Phantasia

Shin Megamei Tensai

Secret of Stars

Earthbound

Treasure Hunter G

Dual Orb 2

Treasure of the Rudras'

Secret of Evermore

Seiken Denetsu 3

Secret of Mana

Alachest

Lufia 1&2

Illusion of Gaia

Terranigma

Soul Blazer

um all i can think of that we could play in cart or rom format.(can you tell I'm bored)

I don't think we should start another game, Crispy, until everyone who is actively playing Star Ocean is finished with the game. That way we can all start and, hopefully, finish together. I will say this, though... I think this concept worked better when we followed a walkthrough and set actual stopping points. That way we could all talk about our progress to that point and discuss strategy. It seems now like it has dissolved to "I am (insert location) with (insert stats)..." and no one is responding. I think that is what made Y's III so much fun.

Id be happy to but i think at least two should be set before we start. From: kain611 | Posted: 1/26/2004 4:17:05 PM | Message Detail Check points would be great as would all using the same walkthrough to get those checkpoints. That way it would seem as more of a "community" effort.

think that is what made Y's III so much fun.

Strange, I had the least amount of fun on that game. That's probably because it was frustrating me, and because I was going so slow.

I'm not setting stop points, because last time that happened, one or two people would be past the stop point before we were actually supposed to stop, and others couldn't finish it in time.

Unlike a book, we can't really gauge how long it will take to get to a certain point in the game. It's not like I can just tell you to read the first 50 pages or so.

Math Deity, have you beaten 7th Saga?

Nah. As much as usually enjoy games that require mad amounts of leveling (Dragon Warrior/Quest etc.) there seemed to be no reward for your work in 7th Saga. All you'd get for beating a boss is access to another boring dungeon with a boss that requires several hours of leveling to beat. I've only ever gotten as far as the 3rd or 4th dungeon before I found something better to play so who knows, it may open up more later. A nice skill or item system could have greatly improved it IMO.

I'll definately set some checkpoints for whatever game we choose. It's looking like the infamous Lord of the Rings will be the game so far.

People are justified in hating the game, because very few people will like it. I'd suggest renting it, or if you can't do that, buy it used off of ebay, so if you don't like it, you aren't out as much.

I personally like Saga Frontier 2 the least out of the seven I've played. I haven't played the two originals, but they both look promising.

And hey, I set a checkpoint! Velcant Lair! It's not my fault everyone is farther than that and they didn't say so until it was too late.

My computer hardware wise should, on paper, be good, but I think someone hacked in/I downloaded a new trojan and they are using my computer as a screen for thier more dubious activities. I think it is some 15-year-old kid with enough computer knowledge to do a little bit of hacking. Reason I think this is somehow the spyware on my machine keeps bring up porn site banners and pop-ups, yet this computer is not used in that fashion. This never would have happened if we had enough power to run a firewall. Oh well just another 3 months or so and my mom is going to buy a new family computer, then another 3 or 4 months after that I get my own when I go to college.

Well, I don't really care for anime that much, especially since everything that gets dubbed has horrid voice actors, and everything that gets subbed is overall mediocre.

When did cosplay take off like it did? A few years ago, it was just a group of uber-geeks that wanted to dress up like Sephiroth, and now it seems like everyone takes part in it. Maybe I don't like it because I'm fat, and the choices or characters I could dress up like are limited.

I could probably be Cait Sith or Chongara. I'd probably get stopped at the airport if I dressed like Chongara though.</bad joke based on racial profiling>

SCWU acutally made fun of the FFs since you mentioned Seph. There's Cloud with the squid and fat Yuna (puts up flame shield) if you want some laughs at FF cosplay (btw, they did that on purpose). The actual character cosplays are gundam (definitely not Gundam W, which sucked imo), Biohazard/Resident Evil, Virtual On, Naruto, old robots from the old gundam series but aren't gundams (old as in, old, MS08 and older), two EVA cosplays, three cosplay I'm not sure the English name is, and one cosplay if from some American scary movie mixed with a tiny bit of Hellsing in there. Anyways, it's your choice if you want to try it or not. But, seeing how much free time you have you should try it out even if you don't like anime.

Okay, I haven't seen/play half of the anime/games that the characters cosplayed and I enjoyed it.

What's Explorer? It sounds like a nature retreat or something.

The Explorers are a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts. We "explore" professions. The most well known Explorer groups are the police and fire groups. I'm in our local engineering post. Actually we went up there to ski, then compete in the engineering contest, which we came in second in. It was fun, but it's great to be home and get regular amounts of sleep. I also have a ton of catching up to do on the boards. They've been without my two-cents for a whole weekend.

I'd also like to disagree. Halo is the single reason so many people on Gamefaqs hate the Xbox, because it's fanboy base rivals that of Final Fantasy 7. If they combined it with it's pc partner, it would be good, but both of them individually only have one good mode.

Kotor is from what little I've played a good game, and my friend just picked up Panzer Dragoon Orta and MechAssault cheap, both which look to be at least decent games.

On topic, I've just finished Star Ocean. No matter if we play Lord of the Rings or Ninja Boy, I'm going to play it, but don't expect me to keep up. Between Little Fighter 2, Unlimited Saga, Fire Emblem, Dynasty Warriors 4XL, Heroes 3 and Septerra Core, my play time is all but used up.

So if we actually use stopping points through the whole game, don't wait for me to get to them, because I'm going to be far behind.

hmm... i enjoyed the second half of FF3. no, i'm not a writer or anyone who knows how a good story should flow, but i know what i like. i'm not really a fanboy, though i do like most every FF game. it does sort of seem to me now that it might have been an attempt to just draw the game on longer, but back when i was playing this game, it just amazed me that there was more to do. i liked the idea that my party got scattered all over the new world. it was really fun finding them and exploring the world of ruin. i liked how non-linear it was... that was pretty new for a FF game. and i'm a big sidequest guy, so i loved finding all the "secret" espers and weapons and characters and quests. i dunno, that game just really hit what i like in a game: loveable chars, great story with great plot-twists, good graphics, and great music.

sorry i ranted... i guess i'm closer to being a fanboy of this game than not. :P haha

I'm still playing SO (and, um RS3 for that matter). I've had a lot of work to do this week for classes, but I'll try to finish up SO this weekend.

Though I don't think I'll play LotR.

I'll still try to post from time to time to see how things are going.

How about this one? The other is only 16k.

How about we make Sunday the tentative starting date?

very slight spoilers

The first leg of the faq (Finding Pippen) doesn't take long if I recall so finishing the section entitled Gaffer's Glasses would probably be a good first checkpoint. Among other things that would require findings his glasses and a few other items. (a lot harder than it sounds, I think I've only gotten that far once).

Btw, I intend to post my passwords here as the little slips of paper I tend to jot them on fall victim to spills and loss far to often.

That's OK, UGA180, we are just now starting and I don't think everyone is going to get around to it today anyway. As long as you catch up once you get started, you're golden.

BTW, I have started going into the caves trying to find the Gaffer's Glasses. Is there an easy way to regain energy? As of now I haven't found a way at all and I am perilously close to dying. Frodo and Pippin are both at level 2 and I am trying to level them up before I actually venture much into the caves. Any suggestions?

there are of course the mushrooms you can find in bags in some rooms... but also the luminous green portions of some walls (usually in a corner) are healing moss. i don't think there's any other way to heal.

Pippin pisses me off... all he does is die. he attacks literally 2 seconds late and he just gets romped on by these stupid bats. the hit detection isn't the best in this game so i have a hard time saving him. also, you can't bring anyone back to life, can you? once they're dead, they're gone. that sucks. i've had to reset like 4 times because of that. dammit.

So, I'm not one for cheating, but I found a pattern in the code system and have figured out how to level my characters up to level 9. I can't find the stupid glasses, though, but I think I have just about stumbled onto everything else there is in these caves. Anyway, the password I have right now is this:

...... LKWLKW

...... ......

.....K ...HKW

...... F...MF

The levels and inventory of the two characters has something to do with the top line and the H on the third line. I only used this method to level up the two a bit instead of aimlessly walking around and leveling up myself. If you change the two Ls up or down, your level goes with it, but you also have to change the H up or down two letters. I might use this later when I am wandering around leveling again and don't want to spend a lot of time doing so. I did go and get the daggers and padded armor by myself along with the gem and a mushroom, but I think I have figured out that code progression as well. I won't use it, though.

Patrick: Yes, the hit detection does suck on this game, which is probably what makes it so tough. I hate how Pippin just sits back and takes hits, but if his level is high enough, then its almost like having a shield for Frodo to romp on whatever else is on the screen.

Well, LotR is no Secret of Mana...

I'm done playing for today. I've reached the first checkpoint. I have both gems and returned the glasses to the gaffer. Frodo is level 9 and Pippen is level 7. I used the faq to find one of the gems; everything else I stumbled on. Btw, the orcs are great for leveling up, especially the one guarding the fern. He gives 8 experience per kill and you can use the fern to heal your injuries. I just wish there were no loading times. Here's my password.

I guess it's just us three against the forces of Mordor >_>

The next checkpoint should be finishing the section entitled the barrow-downs I suppose. From glancing through the faq I would expect this to take several days if you don't use a guide. Here's what he has to say about the barrow-downs.

The Barrow-Downs is nothing short of GIGANTIC! If you thought the

Hobbiton Caves were big, you have a surprise coming here. The Barrow-Downs

consist of a multitude of caves connected across several large areas. Most

of them are relatively small, but the sheer size of the Barrow-Downs itself

is enough to confuse just about anybody. Be careful!

I'm quite tempted to just use the faq to get through them. It's been a long time since I made any maps (SoE probably). I think I'll give it a go on my own first but will probably resort to the faq at some point.

I really want to level him up a bit before I go into the Downs.

Same premise as before just different game. Wanna join?

Yea! I have this game on Cart (and alot free time), so why not...

I am just about to enter the Barrow Downs now, so we aren't too far ahead really.

If you wont make it past the Barrow Downs, I can give you codes that let you start in Bree, or any other place in the game. I have all my codes written down on paper. I don't encourage you to cheat, but it might keep your interest in this game if you progress instead of being stuck on the same place. So just ask...

Maybe you can help us out a bit. Do YOU know how to control Samwise?

Ok, let me explain my theory:

Playing the Cart version on the SNES, you control Frodo with controller 1. The rest of your party is than controlled automatic by the AI. Once Aragon is found, player One control him instead of Frodo. If you want to play two players, a second controller must be connected to the SNES. Player two takes the control of Sam (or maybe Pippin).

Note that as long as the Controller two is connected to the SNES, that Gamepad is controlling Sam/Pippin. The only way to switch Sam/Pippin from human controlled to AI, is by disconnecting the controller two. By pressing and holding the "L" button on controller one, in two player mode) you are taking control of all the additional characters in your party and can move/fight/parry with them except Sam/Pippin who's controlled by the Second Gamepad. And here's the catch. The Emulator is programmed with an internal "Multitap", with at least TWO controllers that's ALWAYS connected to the "SNES in the Computer". Because of you can't disconnect the controllers from the Emulator, there's always a controller that takes the role of Sam/Pippin. And that wont let the AI take over, because the Emulator think it's someone who actually playing with the Second controller. That's why the "Can't control Sam" problem only occurs on the ROM version of SNES LotR.

I know that wasn't very good explained, but I hope you know what I mean... Otherwise, just ask me...

I am now ready to enter the Barrow Downs. I have leveled up all my characters and here is what it looks like:

Frodo: 19, Dagger/Padded Armor

Pippin: 19, Dagger/Padded Armor

Samwise: 9, Old Dagger/Cloth

Merry: 9, Old Dagger/Cloth

The code is:

L-TL-T 3KW3KW

------ ------

F-K-LN -T-2TB

--B--F FBF-SF

I started walking in the next area a little bit and actually got to the Barrow downs, but when I got there all my characters left (except Frodo). Is this supposed to happen? Any explanation? Or is this a bug in the game?

A funny thing. If you walk back to the Place where Merry joined you, after the Party has been eaten by the Tree, Merry will be there again, and join Frodo a Second time. Than you should walk to the Tree and get him eaten a second time. Now your old party will be lost forever, because Tom will only free the Second Merry out of the tree...Glitchy...

Note that you don't have to get your Party eaten by the Tree, just leave the "Item Bag" with the "Old Man Willow Note" alone and you don't have to worry...

Ok, go to the Lord of the Rings Section. Click on the name. A New window will pop up. Than Jump to page 8 (do it by selecting "Page 8" on the Scroll down menu at the bottom of the window). And there are all the maps from A to O.

Btw, I think my Maps are better, because I've made some notes on them (where you can find the Keys and to which door they lead). That's VERY useful in Moria. Of course they're useless where I need them now (sarcasm). I actually have the manual for this game. I guess I can just use that, huh? Duh! (I'm not the reddest apple on the tree apparently)

I wanted to run something by you guys. I think for the next game, I am going to give it it's own topic to try and drum up more interest. I think it would be fun if we had like 15 or 20 of us playing at the same time.

No... If you don't play as hell!

You can't Save/take Password in Moria, you have to start from Bree everytime you want to go there. It will take at least two hours to finish the Last part. Note that this is after you've beaten the Barrow Downs. And it is boring as hell...

Off the top of my head I'd guess it would take at least 5 solid sittings to finish the rest of LotR. I'd have no problem with dropping it altogether if ya'll want.

If we dropped this game, it would be three in a row that I wouldn't finish. Now, granted, the last two were due to computer problems at home and I am going to eventually play those games again. But, if I don't play this game now, I am afraid I never will. I just don't want to take too much time away from everyone else who might want to play with us on a different game.

Go ahead and wait, Tech, and when we finish this game, I will give it its own topic. I am going to make up some pretty easy rules that should be easy to follow and make it easier for people to join in and for people to keep up (still trying to figure it out, though, but I will). So, wait at least until we get pretty far into this one and then we'll cross that bridge. Camden, where are you, man? I know you said you were playing, but I haven't heard from you on this game since then. Kain, too.

think for the next game, I am going to give it it's own topic to try and drum up more interest.

That's a good idea, seeing as people won't be scared entering a 350+ topic, but don't expect 15 or 20 people. First off, there just isn't that many people who care. Second, Tech is next, and if he picks one of the games I'm thinking of, then we'll be playing an untranslated game, i.e. it will probably just be me and him.

Do you think it is possible to finish this game by next week?

*looks at his save that's still in the first dungeon

I'm glad I told you not to wait for me :P

I just don't want to take too much time away from everyone else who might want to play with us on a different game.

Read my first response.

Well, I'm suppose to pick the next game and just to tell you it's going to be strategy/rpg style.

My guesses are still valid.

Choices? We get to choose ourselves? Yay!

Camden, where are you, man? I know you said you were playing, but I haven't heard from you on this game since then. Kain, too.

Like I said, I remember why I don't like the game, so I'm just going very slowly. I'm playing this like you're playing the last two; not trying to finish with everyone else, just finishing when you get time.

SO far, I am unimpressed. The controls suck, the hit detection is poor, and fact that everybody wanders the screen aimlessly getting their ass kicked really sucks. The graphics are fine, but once you've seen the first cave, you've obviously seen all the game has to offer, because it has all been the same since. Thank God I figured out the code progression so I don't have to wander around fighting wolves and snakes to level up four characters, one of which is impossible to move unless you have a four player adapter. The music is fine, but when I play stoned I have nightmares all night of little hobbits attacking me in the same cave over and over.

I didn't get to play much last night because I was re-living old college memories of Mario Party on N64 (yes, One2, the console sucks) and didn't get around to it. As much as I am putting it down, though, I WILL finish this game. I have heard of far too few people that have actually beaten it and I want to add my name to that list. I'm sure I will make Z3RO proud.

The game irritates me to no end, and I'm not one of those people who say you have to finish a game or your opinion doesn't matter because "you didn't play far enough into it". I played far enough into it for now, and that's the end of the first area. At least I think it's the end.

Yeah Fleck I'm not playing it anymore. I apologize, I feel like the biggest horse's ass for picking the game and then abandoning it. I actually think LotR is a decent game, it might even deserve a 6/10 but I just can't deal with those dungeons. I should have picked a game most people say sucks that I believe has redeeming qualities (like my current obsession, Time Stalkers for DC). No, please don't use the FaQ...

Now when I see that some more players joined in, I'll keep playing from my last save (earlier in this topic).

For me, the Barrow Downs is much more harder then Moria, because I have played the last part of this game too many times... So If you'll make it past the Barrow Downs, you just have one Big cave left except Moria...

I could see how you might see reading a FAQ as cheating, but save states? I don't see it as cheating, I just see it as something the developers should have added from the start of the genre. Having to replay six hours of a game because a boss attacked you at a completely random spot isn't fun. Save states correct the issue.

By the way, I'm still at the beginning. Don't expect me to be caught up until... oh... say... we finish the game Tech chooses and whatever game the next person chooses. I might be caught up by then.

It should be "Delin doesn't know.". I don't know what game Tech is choosing, but I don't think we'll be finishing in two weeks. I assume LotR will take whoever is trying to finish in a reasonable amount of time at least another four or five days, so you'll probably be choosing late-march.

Do you have an idea which game you'll be picking?

Yea maybe, but they didn't...

So you think it's ok to save before a boss fight, so you can start exactly from there once you loose? And not call it cheating? lol.... LotR can be beaten in two days using Save States, but the thing is that you should keep playing (and start all over once you die) till you know the game and know exactly where to go. But with save states, you never have to start over, because you "can't" die, you just start from your last save and keep all your lives.

My friend,

Using Save States in a SNES game is 100% cheating...

Try to beat LotR on the Cart version, THAT's a challenge.

YAY!!!!! I'm at Bree now!!!

The Barrow Downs (I started at the place with the poles)took me exactly 1 Hour and 15 Minutes. Ok, here's a few tips for you who haven't beaten The Barrow Downs yet.

1) Check EVERY single entrance, and don't be confused if it's many of them. I think about 70% of the Cave entrances are not necessary to enter.

2) Once you're in a cave and enter a new screen that looks like it'll lead to a bigger cave system, make sure that you have checked every scene before that part, just to make sure that you haven't missed any key item.

3) When you end up in front of the Master Door (A bigger door then the normally doors) that'll lead out of the Barrow Downs, and can't find any key that'll open it. This happened me) Go back two sections until you find a place filled with entrances, with cloud in the Air. Take the middle right door and you'll have the final Key.

4) Once you arrived to Bree, take the Password and DOUBLE CHECK that you wrote it correctly. This is very important, because it contains so many characters that It's easy to miss one...

Ok, hope that'll help someone... Here's my password this far:

T2YLTY - 3Y3TW

- - - - - - - - - - - -

JTQ8NN - T - VKC

- - ZCT - YBY - RF

I'll wont continue until we all are at Bree...

Good Luck all!

it's ok, people, i'm a profesional cheater. i got through, let's see... 2 years of junior high, 4 years of high school, and 3 semesters of college (so far) by cheating. it's ingrained into my brain. if i don't cheat, then i'll die. so really, i'd be cheating myself if i DIDN'T cheat.

So you think it's ok to save before a boss fight, so you can start exactly from there once you loose?

Yes. Usually after I die, and then realize that I lost a few hours a gameplay, I just sit the controller down and stop playing. It's usually quite a long time before I start again.

And not call it cheating?

Err...no.

till you know the game and know exactly where to go.

I play games for fun. Memorizing large maps is tedious, not fun.

Try to beat LotR on the Cart version, THAT's a challenge.

Even with save states, it doesn't look like I'll be beating the game. I'm sure leveling up to Lv99 in Secret of Mana before the Mantis Ant is a challenge as well, but I'm not going to do it.

From: PatrickPS2 | Posted: 2/23/2004 1:50:30 PM | Message Detail

yeah i'm sort of with Camden on this one.

if people want to cheat, i don't mind... i only play the game to enjoy it. if an 'infintite health' code helps me enjoy the game more, so be it. if a save state is used right before a boss fight whereas normally the last save point would be 20 minutes of gameplay ago, then it's all good. i'm like Camden, if i die and realize i've lost an hour of gameplay (hell, even 10 minutes), then most probably i'll set the controller down and switch it over to watching tv.

i can definitely see the point in trying to beat a game with challenges (i.e. - no savestates, cartridge only) then that's all you. more power to ya! :P i just have niether the time or patience to attempt anything like that.

Spoilers?

Heh, talking about save states and cheating. Personally, it's sort of cheating. However, I hate to say it but sometimes I "have" to use savestates. It's either that or when my mom finds out I'm playing games and I have to shut the game down in merely second you think I have the time to save the normal way? Don't think so. Also, there's times (namely Dual Orb 2) when the party is stuck (literally) in a dungeon with a ****ing hard boss (cough, if you play the game and haven't upgraded any weapon to lv20 and try to fight the later bosses, you'll feel what I felt), you'll wish that you have save states that lets you backtrack (all my normal saves were in that damn dungon -.-). Same with the above posters. I hate to see hours (or even minutes) of gameplay wasted. I really don't want to go through the dungeon again if I died in a boss fight. As for cheating... Well, only sort of cheats in Der Langrisser lately (and that's like a year ago) and I only used its original cheat feature in the game that allows player to access different levels. Basically used that to get levels and such that's all and makes lives easier. Of course, my characters still die when enemy mages start casting area magics, and the bosses can still kill my leader if I'm not careful. But, not having to worry so much about levels made it fun, and that'll be enough for a game to give me. (I can sense hard core strategy gamers start yelling at me)

It doesn't look like I am going to catch up tonight. I came home for lunch today and found our new cat dead in the garage. I have been pretty bummed all day and haven't been motivated to do anything. If any of you remember the story of my kitten jumping up to grab my controller cord and inadvertently erasing my save on Lufia II, he was the one. Really sucks. So, since tonight I am going to bed early and tomorrow is Fat Tuesday and I am not going to pass up the opportunity to look at hooters, I will catch up to Bree on Wed. Feel free to go on ahead without me.

BTW, welcome matthewcarter50. I will get an updated list up tomorrow sometime.

If you have a comment next to your name it is because you only posted once and we haven't heard from you since.

First off, you don't need to write Teath next to me anymore, it's in the Pending Closure state, though it's going to be there a while, what with one of it's active messages being on Message Board Announcements.

Second, JESUS THAT LIST IS ****ING HUGE!! We should try some kind of roll call to even see if half of those people still visit this board. Jesus, that thing tripled since you last posted it.

So are we going to attempt finishing Lord of the Rings by the end of this topic? I just got to the Downs, and from what you guys have said, I'll be there for quite a while. The next game will be Techs choice, so most people will probably wait until it's Delins turn before joining in, because there are too few people who aren't apprehensive about playing a non-translated sfc game.

Just noticed something interesting for those people playing LotR on a emulator.

When you give aragron the kingsfoil you controls will no longer work! Its because aragron gets assigned to control setup 1 and the hobbits to control setup 2. What your need to do is config input #2 on the emulator and use those controls untill aragorn joins properly. Also when you talk to Aragorn after giving him the kingsfoil nothing will happen for about 30 secs because samwise is been moved by the game from the entrance to bree up to the prancing pony.

**** i just realised something else, as soon as you lead your hobbits out of bree with conrol setup 2 and Aragron joins you so he is now the leader so you need to go back to control setup 1 to control him, merry, sam and pippen. Now frodo doesnt move just like sam didnt before.

That narrows the choices down a bit. Bahamut Lagoon, FEDA, SRW3 and Jyutei Senki(sp) are the only four translated that I can think of. Jyutei Senki is probably the only game you could name that I wouldn't even give a chance, I hate that game. Lord of the Rings is so much better.

Like I said some time ago, there will be choices so you guys can avoid games that you "really" don't want to play. Jutei Senki is one title I avoided as well. Tried it before, but it sucked. Yeah, you can count that one out.

Btw, the games I'm choosing will have at least a walkthrough if it has not been translated into English, so don't worry if you can't read the Japanese. You'll have walkthroughs at your desposal.

Btw, isn't Front Mission a strategy rpg? I'm not gonna pick it, but just pointing that out since it's also fan translated.

Does anyone have a code with all five gateway gems and all three amulets? I have tried to go backwards and find that damn red gem, but I can't find it and none of your codes have it either. My new code up to now is:

320320 L30320

---32T ------

JTQ85N -T-R2-

KCZCTC YBYB8G

BTW, I have no idea how I came up with Athelas Major. I was trying to break code to level people up and ended up with it. I almost have this code system worked out (with the exception of location codes), so if someone has a code with the red gateway gem, I am pretty sure I can figure out how to just add it to my existing code.

Z3RO, don't worry, I am not using my code breaking abilities to cheat aside from a little minor leveling up here and there so I don't have to spend the time doing it.

Ok, here's a random code of mine with the red Gateway Gem resent. (Don't flame me if it doesn't, or if the code is dead, because I haven't checked it):

welcome to the club viewtifulreed22... as you can see, this is a tightly knit social group which very few can enter. however YOU, my friend, have been chosen. err wait. nevermind.

heh yeah dude pick up the game (rom or cartridge), steal a password from somebody (or start from the beginning if you have infinite patience), and join the discussion... i'm sure Fleck will stick your name on the game picking list, though you'll be a ways down. just make sure you keep posting or you'll lost your spot!

Z3RO, do you have a code that is at Bree with all five gems? That code has more characters and is in Rivendell.

BTW, I am about to give this game its own topic. Four more posts and this topic will be closed, so it will need its own. I want to be done with this game by Friday so we can name a new game, get the topic started, get a head count and start playing by Sunday. Is that good for everyone? It looks to me that, besides leveling, there is only about 7-8 hours of gameplay left on this game. Is that about right Z3RO?

Well, if I could find the Gem in my file, would you be able to make use of it? Or should I use your password. Yeah, i'll use yours. Anyway, I hope we can get this finished soon, even though it won't be for a while, i've got a few ideas for my game.... if it ever gets to me.

I double checked it. With the Gem, everything else that Fleck had. I hope this helps.
