The Klik of the Month Klub meets right here on this very website on the third Saturday of every month at 4pm Pacific Time (taking daylight savings into consideration) for a two hour Klik & Play Showdown. Everyone who participates gets two hours to create something from scratch in Klik & Play. Abusing the stock objects is encouraged. If you really loathe Klik & Play you can use whatever game development platform you want. Two hours is a pretty tight time limit, though, so choose wisely!
Klik & Play is absolutely free to download, and learning it takes minutes, so everyone can get in on the action. Want to talk to your fellow Klikwreckers? Join us on IRC -- server irc.freenode.net, channel #glorioustrainwrecks. Join the mayhem!

I just realized that I am not going to be able to make it as I will be getting ready to dance around in a unitard pretending to be a cat.

Please post pictures.
Here's your damn pictures.
Here's your damn pictures. Bonus points if you recognize my defunct dot-com company t-shirt in the post-show Chinese food shot.

Funny, I was imagining this instead

SpindleyQ my klikwreck will be cat and/or dance-themed in your honour.
Wait, is this also National Explosion Day? Also explosions.

I've been invited down to the sea for a night. Believe me, I tried to explain to my (now ex-)friends the KotMK Koncept and why exactly I must be home to choreograph a number of exploding cheerleaders, but their eyes glazed over like danish pastries.
My entry will be a couple of hours late.
Look on the bright side: you
Look on the bright side: you will not be dressed as a cat. At least, not as far as we know.

Thanks! It could have been a lot more elegant, but you know, time constraints.
Im quite interested these days in trying to push KNP to its limits. One of its limits being seemingly unable to handle a simple keypress.
Ps. I really like the concept for your game, Kirk, especially since I felt I was getting better at it every time.
In terms of pushing
In terms of pushing limits... it's a subtle distinction but I think I (when I mess w/ KNP) try to find surprising ways the system can be used, as opposed to setting a goal and seeing if it can be met. Which do you think is closer to your approach?
Thanks for the compliment. I think it came together pretty well, and is an interesting challenge. That word list is an easy way to get lots of distinct content into a game, which is one luxury you often don't have when making a 2 hour game.
Speaking of 2 hours, I've noticed a lot of time leaking this time around, from people who couldn't attend at quite the appointed hour, to just needing a bit more time. I don't think this is a bad thing, as long as we maintain the core 2 hour idea. Actually, we should almost call it a 3 hour idea, sometimes I get so excited about the concept of doing something in 2 hours that I forget to plan around the hour after to enjoy the fruits of others' labors
Yeah I am much more the
Yeah I am much more the latter definition: rather than using restriction as the fertile soil for interesting mechanics, I like trying to make staples of gaming work, in what a lot of people would believe is a pretty shallow environment. I guess it appeals to some lust for problem solving, or something.
Anyway, I am like a MacGuyver to your Iron Chef Chen Kenichi.

I present for your consideration a super-short game (complete with surprise ending) made in under one hour: Flebs.
Zombie Invasion: the Body Explosion
A zombiexcityxpsychic man arena shooter. Kill zombies with your super mind powers but watch out for the explosions and don't let the zombies touch you either. WSAD to move, arrers to shoot shoot SHOOT!
I even remembered to add the correct .dll this time.
Note: Currently adding
Note: Currently adding sword-wielding bikini girl to game as I said in #glorioustrainwrecks. Even though I'm supposed to be developing a game about giant gingerbread men destroying a candy city.
Oh man I just played this.
Oh man I just played this. You are the God of Gore.
Simple 2000: Zombie Versus Slashing
And soon I'll be the Russ Meyer lite of the Klik scene when I mod the game into Zombie Slash Bikini Kill. Here's a sexy idle animation to get you all in the mood.
You're putting the horn back
You're putting the horn back into rhinoceros, my friend.
What's your technique? From scratch, w/ a model, some kind of shrinking + tracing?
From scratch. I did think of
From scratch. I did think of capturing some frames on my camera and then shrinking that and drawing over the top but it was just easier to do it form scratch especially as I wanted to make the animations much more exploitive. And if I had someone model for me I wouldn't be doing any games, I'd be too busy in the sack getting mad rutty.

it's pretty hot for a small set of pixels, though a little unnerving how everything shoulder level and above is rock steady, including a penis-y scarf or something...
You ever make an animated GIF gallery? I'd totally link all over that from kirkjerk.com...
I was getting bothered by
I was getting bothered by the lack of shoulder movement myself so I fixed it up so the shoulders and scarf move but not the head as doing anything to that would make it look incorrect due to the small scale I've worked with. It still looks better than what you've seen here that's for sure.
I've done it again with
I've done it again with another learning exercise of mine, Pushing The Button Will Destroy The World With An Explosion.

I should probably have thought this one through a little more, because after two hours I ended up with some exploding lasagna and that is about it.

The mechanic of Garfield shooting at lasagna with slightly smaller lasagnas that explode into even smaller lasagnas when they hit the ground is so amazing that I can't even think about it without getting all giddy. It's like Bizarro Asteroids or something.

PHONEME INVADERS
I THINK I MAY HAVE SUCCEEDED IN MY GOAL OF NERDIEST KLIK OF THE MONTH EVER

anyway, here's a slightly more fair version of PHONEME INVADERS.
I weeded out a few thousand words that were homonyms.
That is fantastic. It seems
That is fantastic. It seems like it should be so easy, but it keeps tripping you up!
Now all we need is to superimpose the phonemes onto zombies.
Uh oh, this game might be
Uh oh, this game might be more fantastic than rhinoceros...
(actually my first idea was for "rhymenoceros", where you had to, I dunno, let the rhino charge into the words that didn't rhyme. But I couldn't find a downloadable. parsable dictionary for that.)
I'm toying with trying to polish up a semi-serious sequel to this, make it a little more forgiving, have it so there are waves, things are a little more flashy, little details like you don't have to press return, a few more animations, etc. Maybe a different name as well. This seems at least as playable as those boggle derivative "find the permutations of this" games I see online!
Here's my Kirk Israel
Here's my Kirk Israel impression:
"OH DEAR I ACCIDENTALLY MADE A GOOD GAME INSTEAD OF A CRAPPY ONE WOE IS ME"
Successful game companies have been started on less. Probably.
Essential Jellyfish
Okay, well, I started 2 hours late and went about 15 minutes over, and I STILL didn't make anything close to my original idea (to be called There Are Zombies And You Are Golfing), but here's what happened when I called it quits and came up with a title screen: Essential Jellyfish.
it's actually rather
it's actually rather pleasant to tool around with, and the catch and throw mechanism seems to have some potential...
UTOPIA
protect UTOPIA!
you can play this with a friend, or by yourself for a weird experience of doing different things with each hand.
I was interrupted a lot tonight, so I'm pretty damn late in finishing this.
what do the items do?
what do the items do?
the campfire logs give you
the campfire logs give you more life, the bundles of dynamite give you rockets
the wizards must be avoided and/or shot, and everything at the bottom of the screen does nothing at all.
