As far as I know that's the fastest time possible.
Do you think contrast is a big issue? I was aiming for just-barely-enough-contrast, but I'm inclined to agree with your complaint and have been working on modifications. Are you playing the game fullscreen?
Drop this into my level's Gradients folder and tell me what you think. The only monitors I have access to at the moment are terrible for colour depth or any sort of subtle gradation, so I really can't tell myself.

The night graphics do NOT have enough contrast.

I was playing windowed over the Nifflas forum. I think the gradient is more the issue. The contrast is fine at the bottom, but not the top:
A couple random colors from the terrain: RGB(5, 2, 6), RGB(9, 3, 10).
Bottom of the sky: RGB(25, 33, 30)
Top of the sky: RGB(10, 10, 10)
The terrain and the top of the sky almost match up, really (save for green, but that's hardly noticeable).

It's much better. I can
It's much better. I can actually see my way across that overhang now.
