Hey! Do you wish there was something you could do to contribute further to the 529-in-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart II? Well, now there is!
In developing my TOP SECRET Win3.1 game launching solution, I realized that my homebuilt menu was looking a little lacking in comparison. No splash screen! No crazy icons! LET'S FIX THIS.
I'm hoping that some friendly folks in the community might be able to contribute the following:
- Splash screen graphic(s)! Let's say around 400x400 pixels. Should say, "529-in-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart II: Klik Harder" on it somehow. Also, slap the Glorious Trainwrecks logo on there somewhere. If I get more than one, I'll write some code to pick one randomly at startup. If I don't get any, I guess I'll just paste our logo onto the splash screen I linked above in MSPaint.
- Background music! I mean, why not, this thing is going to be CD-ROM sized anyway. MIDI or MP3 format. Bonus points for original work. Extra bonus points for accordion playing. In fact, I might just bundle an album's worth of public domain polka music.
- Please make suggestions on how to "spruce up" my interface, with icons, amusing/anachronistic logos, abusive colour schemes, etc. (Note that the bottom pane will contain the screenshot / description of the game as an HTML page (with links to author information, the corrseponding glorioustrainwrecks page to comment, etc), and the "Random Sort" checkbox will soon become a button, probably marked "Shuffle".)
In general, I feel like the Pirate Kart menu ought to be a multimedia experience that bemuses and delights. I know we've got some talented people here, so if you feel like you have something you might like to add, go for it! I will attempt to incorporate as many contributed ideas and pieces of art as possible.

I sadly haven't made any accordion music (yet), but if you guys want you can use a couple songs I've made in the past couple of months. One's made with my little sister's toy piano, a couple closely qualify as chiptunes, and one's a drone-doom metal song made with a five string guitar. If you guys like 'em feel free to use 'em.
That waltz was pretty classy, Terry. =)

Jealous!
The only thing that matters is that you own Toonstruck and that I may soon be paying your home a visit so that I may steal it.
Oh god the original CD case to KnP
That is incredible. Floods of memories rush back to me now. I wonder if my dad still has that laying around.
I am also in awe of Toonstruck, BTW. I still have that disc somewhere, though I doubt it would work anymore.
It will!
It seems to be a hobby of mine to get old games working on modern systems... and then never really play them. D:
I got Toonstruck functioning on both Windows XP and Windows Vista (using DOSbox, if I recall correctly) and I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of guides around for Toonstruck specifically if you ever get stuck. Do it!
Categories for Buttons
Can you query the keywords entered to get us the smallest set needed to cover every single game? I think that category set would be much more interesting than "Racing" and "Puzzle" and "Casino".

Your interface doesn't waste
Your interface doesn't waste enough space. For starters, I think you should make those buttons, like, three times as large as they currently are (would make it more Windows 3.1-esque). It also could use some horribly pointless decorative image borders around the edges. I could design a few, if you like.
Edit: Where did Author Info go?
Edit 2: Another suggestion: Use ridiculous amounts of padding. Like, 20-30 pixels width in padding. Just like 3.1!
I think the best way of
I think the best way of beefing up the button size is probably horrible button icons. Pointless borders sound like a pretty decent idea.
My biggest concern with tweaking the layout is that I still want it to be fairly usable. But then, given the terrible UX of this site, I'm not exactly in the best position to be judging that.
I'm currently thinking "Author info" will be a link in the game's description pane, but I could be persuaded to have an outside button or toggle.

We should totally go with
We should totally go with the randomizer idea for the splash images. Would add a lot of depth to the menu, I think.
I've kind of been thinking
I've kind of been thinking that, since the menu is actually generated programatically, we could potentially be really, really aggressive with user interface randomization. Like, the longer you play, the more likely that the font for the game list will periodically switch to Wingdings for a fraction of a second. Or have the interface colours change randomly every 15 seconds.
It also just occurred to me that having achievements would be awesome and terrible and awesome. ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: PLAYED EACH GAME 23 TIMES EXACTLY
god what am i getting myself into
Achievements
If you do that, it should be a healthy mix of achievable goals, and completely impossible goals.

Played a game every day for a week.
Achievements II: ACHIEVE HARDER
Rhinobunga: Play A Boy and his Rhinoceros
A Winner Is You: Open the program
Achiever: Get an Achievement
All Right This is Rhinoceros: Get two Achievements
i have no life: Get 100 Achievements
Stalker: Click on someone's bio
They Always Come Back: Player exits the game
And all these splash pages are, dare I say it, glorious.
Sounds great, but out of
Sounds great, but out of fairness, I think we should avoid game-specific achievements. Or have one achievement per game author. Which probably won't happen.
I love the interface
I love the interface randomization idea! The weird, borderline epileptic textures of VVVVVV come to mind, but I imagine that might not be very fun to implement.
I'd also love to see a random game function where it scrolled really quickly through all the options at first and slowed down to land on one. Like a roulette wheel, or the Action Point awards ceremony.

Just a few questions
As I haven't contributed any games, I'd like to make something in gui.
1. Are there any maximum dimensions for icons of genres?
2. What are the basic genres of games?
3. Will the menu run nicely in 1024.x768
4. Should I make a cover for dvd box? That would be classy, having such a collection among all those Mass Effects and Gears Of Wars.
5. What about making a VERY TOP SECRET GAME, hidden somewhere in interface, or being runnable by unlocking all the achievements?
Here are my guesses
Going by the tags SpindleyQ posted, the categories could be:
sjsu
art game
virtua
sports
marek
shooter
parody
mouse control
platformer
shmup
space
Dinosaur
...which is a pretty rhinoceros list if you ask me, but we should probably add a few general tags to cover all the games not included by these? Icons should probably be 32x32 16colors if we want to be historically accurate, but we could go up to 64x64 for visibility. And a DVD box is a good idea, I know I plan to burn this to plastic the moment I can.
If someone's making genre
If someone's making genre icons I really think we should have one for "Jane Austen". I'll tag the damn games myself if I have to.
I think the genre stuff
I think the genre stuff sounds like a great idea, but we really should tag more games. At the very least, I think our genres will have to cover perhaps half the collection (we could shove the rest under "weird/other" or something). Otherwise, it just becomes "featured tags" and not "genres".
We need to have an "AWESOME"
We need to have an "AWESOME" tag; obviously every game should be tagged.

When will you stop taking new title screens and music? There isn't any date listed on this...
I don't see much point in
I don't see much point in setting a firm deadline, since all I have to do to add a new splash screen is save it to the "splash" directory. I'm happy to accept that kind of contribution right up until it's time to release.
As for when I'll be ready to release, it shouldn't be too much longer now. Extracting everything out of the database into a form I can use is proving more time consuming than I initially thought.

We ought to include ipanema.mid from the original Pirate Kart, simply because I thought it was the most awesome complementary music (though it's annoying how that menu no longer uses my default MIDI synth, nor plays at a bearable volume, ever since I installed Timidity++... I think it decided to switch to Microsoft's software synth for some weird reason).

And three audio tracks from the 1996 CD "Music for Multimedia".
As a bonus, I've recorded one of those horrible audio instructions tracks that I remember some software collection CDs playing whenever you started them up. I'm the opposite of a professional voice actor, and it almost sounds appropriate in this context. (I thought of this because the Music for Multimedia CD starts with one of those instructional tracks) My first version was a bit too commercial sounding, though.

Music for Multimedia
There really weren't that many other good tracks on the disk. The best tracks were all from the pop/rock folder, and then there was the "fantasy/atmospheric" folder that consisted of some idiot playing random notes on a synth pad for several minutes, and the story trax folder that had cliche comedic silent movie scores. Okay, I guess those don't sound too bad, but there were whole folders dedicated to "button sound effects" so you could have an echo-y minor key piano chord with every mouseclick of your multimedia project. Okay, I lied, the CD is pure gold. Where should I upload a zipped version of all the audio files and maybe the interface (win 3.1 compatible btw)?
I don't suppose the rights-holders will mind too much, seeing that their work sells for less than 4 dollars these days.

I think this is probably the only MIDI file I could import into ModPlug Tracker because it failed at proper timings for the other MIDIs when it's not even that hard to get right... anyone else know of ways to import MIDI so that the samples can be switched around?
I took a stab at it, and I
I took a stab at it, and I ended up just adjusting the tempo manually. The samples are easier to switch around by importing a .wav in the "Instruments" tab, NOT the "Samples", since the instruments are made up of lots of samples at different pitches you'd need to individually replace otherwise. I've attached an example .it file I threw together quickly. I don't know if you'll be able to tell what I've done just by looking at it (I have this suspicion I've maybe misunderstood your question though?)

So, when's the release?

Currently I'm fighting with
Currently I'm fighting with the music player, which has turned out to be way more irritating to implement than planned. Hopefully I should have a working solution implemented soon.
Not sure where/how to fit in the icons.
Still have some scraping tasks to do. (Bios in particular.)
Need to finish up the readme and/or NFO file.
Need an official cracktro.
Need to finish setting up a torrent tracker so that I don't get dinged for bandwidth overage when this monster is finally released and more than, say, 300 people want it.
About the icons
Say, there would be three main sorting types of games:
- main theme (icons)
- by tags
- by authors
I think it's self explanatory. Cracktro will be done soon, but readme should be done by someone with enough writing-in-English skills (if we don't go chinese-engrish style).
The problem is, who's going
The problem is, who's going to assign an icon to all 529 games? Even if you only took a minute to classify each game, that's 9 hours of work.
SQL-fu
Is there a way to find the minimum number of tags necessary to cover every game in the database? It seemed like everybody was pretty good about tagging their games, and the autocomplete on that field made a lot of people use the exact same tags. There's got to be some query you can write that would return a minimum set of tags that we could use, instead of making new categories and categorizing them.
Let us keep this thread relevant...
We must not let it die. I'm still waiting for the kart... <:(
Maybe we should have a Pirate Kart Icon Kreation Kontest (gratuitous use of the the letter k as substitute for c and unintentional reference to the KKK is gratuitious... and unintentional.). We should make people play each of the 529 games and create their own icon for it. The icon for each game will then be randomly selected (to save time) to be on the Kart.
This is what I think needs to be done. I know we've all kinda lost interest in this, but we said we were gonna do it, so we're gonna do it. I asked the Flying Spaghetti Monster about it. He said he'd give us all cookies.
The solution I eventually
The solution I eventually came up with was to just assign the icons as "badges", which show up on the games' pages. Games can have multiple badges, and badges are assigned automatically based on keywords that show up in the title, description, tags, and in the case of the "textgames" badge, engine. I can post the list of keywords if anyone's interested, and if you can think of a game that absolutely must have a certain badge, we can try and figure out a useful keyword for it. (I'm spoiled because I can just type words into the search box of the menu to see what shows up :)
Not all games have badges, but I think that's probably OK. You can sort by badge name, which is kind of fun; a lot less daunting than the millions of tags. If people have any more ideas for badges that they might like to contribute, please do!
I'm sorry this has been taking so long; believe me that I really want to the Kart released as much, or more, as everyone else, if only so that I can work on something else :) The biggest roadblock has been that the time that I've had to work on it with Internet access available has been extremely limited -- I've been doing all of the development on the bus -- and the number of tasks that were completable without it has really dwindled down to nothing. I finally decided to solve that with PDANet, so things are moving smoothly again.
Rest assured: The Pirate Kart is coming, and you will be proud of it.
I hope the tags view is
I hope the tags view is still in there, though? I thought it was really fun to look through the list of weird tags that the first Pirate Kart had ("Move from left-to-right simulator" was probably my favorite). The main thing I'm actually looking forward to with this (apart from downloading all the games at once) is to see a grand list of all the strange and wonderful tags that people have used.
Of course, the tags list is
Of course, the tags list is still there. My guiding principle is simple: every idea goes in, somehow. The more ways to slice up the list of games, the better, I think.
Are you done yet?
Are you done yet?
Status update
Current todo list:
Some "nice to have" things which I may not wait on before releasing but others may still feel free to contribute:
Cracktro complete! Cooked
Cracktro complete! Cooked this up in MMF2. I dunno how you have the Pirate Kart set up, but assume the cracktro would then go on to launch the game browser. I just had it stop for now, but once it's time to release the compilation, I can add whatever functionality you need.
Slick! It's probably fine
Slick!
It's probably fine to just exit, rather than starting up the kart -- as far as I'm aware, the modern convention is just to have the little intro program sitting beside the actual game, rather than trying to force you to watch it before you're allowed to play.

This cracktro won't run on my computer... just like many real cracktros.
EDIT: turns out it was Norton being even stupider than usual. I will be rid of it soon...
Battle of the
Battle of the Cracktros!
Here's the joketro I made in about two nights with (sloppy) C and Allegro. Featuring gratuitous high-color graphical effects that probably need a Pentium 4 or newer to run efficiently. Scroller text is pretty long, so Spacebar will accelerate it. I like this in particular because it has all the names of contributors to the Kart, and the music sounds like some grand finale rolling credits... a perfect way to top off our efforts!
It's a bit fat at 1MB, but it's mainly due to the 24-bit picture of the Gare Montparnasse in the background.
Edit: If we decide on the other joketro, perhaps I could retool this one to be some sort of credits/ending thing. Also, Shadsy should probably find a way to make the music louder. MMF2's built-in module playback is ridiculously quiet for some weird reason. Perhaps use the ModFX 3 extension?
Edit 2: Other remarks:
Shadsy's entry looks more like a real cracktro/demoscene intro, but I think we should continue the injoke of calling the fictitious cracking group the "Secret European Software Cracking Unit" as seen in the "cracked" version of Tek Demo. Also, mouse button presses should probably end the demo as well.

You'll be pleased to hear that I am finally completely satisfied with the menu, and that the only things left on my plate are a little bit more testing (ie, installing it under a fresh copy of Windows XP in VirtualBox and making sure everything still works) and packaging (ie, running my script that scrapes all of the games, screenshots, ratings, etc. on the latest version of the database, 7-zipping the whole mess up, and building a torrent).
Expect a release soon.
Implications
By any chance does this neat little system you've come up with mean that other "event packs" can be assembled in a more timely manner in the future?

I've put some thought into this recently, actually. My current idea is that the Pirate Kart menu is actually not far off from a full-featured Glorious Trainwrecks game browser/downloader/launcher -- the idea being that you could simply run this thing after Klik of the Month Klub ended and bam! you would have a new games to play, as if by magic.
I haven't put forth any effort towards this idea yet, because I'm so eager to get the Pirate Kart out the door, but it's a beautiful dream.
I guess to answer your original question literally, there really isn't any reason I couldn't simply point my script at a different event and generate a whole new "Pirate Kart".
Would you call it "Steam

This reminds me of how quickly August 15th is approaching. I'm also thinking of organizing another chainwreck before then...

Started work on the Invitation Demo last night. Also been watching a ton of demos on youtube and the like. The C64 and Amiga demos provide the best inspiration, since they depend a lot less on sparkly 3D rendering techniques, and more on clever effects accomplished through masks and sprite effects. Those work a lot better in KnP.
