DEATH RACE PC

OK so let me preface this one:

so back in 2008 I visited this most amazing arcade in San Francisco. Within their amazing selection of classic arcade games, was the uber-controversial 1975 classic, Death Race 2000. So as I'm watching my younger brother (still in his 20s, so not that young!!) I'm thinking 'yknow, this looks easy enough that I could probably recreate it in TGF!!' so I set to work.

Various things kept coming up between then and now, but I finally have something to show for it! hopefully soon I'll have something up for download, I just wanted to put this out there to show you guys I'm not dead, lol

Excellent Choice of game

Excellent Choice of game there!

Seriously, when I went up with my friend to a pilgrimage to Funspot in NH that was one of my favorites: kirkjerk.com/2010/11/15/ -- I think some of the appeal was using those great old steering wheels (and I think it's a much better 2 player than 1 player game) but still, the core gameplay stands up over time.

On a technical note, one important aspect is making sure cars tend to get "stuck" on the tombstones that show up, forcing them to shove into reverse. It makes for a much different physical game than one where you can just treat the pedestrians--er, gremlins -- as a speed bump.

hey thanks for the reply! I

hey thanks for the reply! I remember noting that you can use all the clipart from 'klik n play' alongside the libraries of things in The Games Factory, and when I saw the race cars, I knew I could come up with a pretty good clone of Death Race....

My only concern is the controversy I'm sure releasing this game is going to cause... but I suppose if it means people get to play it without having to get really lucky in finding a surviving arcade (let alone one that actually *has* this machine in working condition) I suppose its worth the controversy, huh?

...and I suppose I could find a way to program the 'getting hung up on the tombstones' thing in the game... I just have a 'reset' switch in place now though.

eventually I may i'll fire it up in TGF see if I can tweak it a little then release what I have.

I wouldn't worry about

I wouldn't worry about controversy. I was worried about controversy when I released this, but there was seemingly none whatsoever. It was almost disappointing!

ahh okay... just I really

ahh okay... just I really think a freeware port of a game like that (especially with the extra touches I added -- when you flatten the skater I took one of the 'splat' animations from KNP and painted it red) I'm just waiting for word to get out that it exists and have it banned in the UK and all that...

EDIT: oh yeah I didn't know how you felt about ripping sprites from other games, but the graphic I used for the tombstone was lifted from La-Mulana (easily my favorite indie-developed game of all time... so I kinda did it in tribute to it)

Oh speaking of tribute, when I was trying to think of an appropriate 'death' scream, I knew I had to track down a wav file of the 'wilheim' scream as made famous by movies.
